When to Investigate a Daycare Provider and How

Are you a parent?  If so, you are likely to rely on daycare.  Daycare is how many parents are able to provide for their families, as it enables full-time employment.  With that said, don’t place your child into the hands of just anyone.  For that reason, investigate, investigate, and do some more. When children are involved, you can never be too safe.

So, when should you investigate a daycare provider?  Whenever you want.  You do not need a reason to investigate someone responsible for the care of your children.  With that said, if you are looking for a reason, continue reading on.

A new daycare.  Whether you are just switching daycare providers or relocating to a new state, always research first.  Remember, do not place your child in the hands of anyone.  Visiting a daycare center is recommended, but appointments are scheduled.  This means that preparation steps are taken.  For that reason, rely on other sources of investigation.  To get started, perform a background check.

A new baby.  Even if you have an older child in daycare, it is important to investigate again.  Some adults handle older children better than they handle infants.  Since your infant is more susceptible to injury and death from mistreatment, reexamine your decision of care.  Not only is it important to make sure your child isn’t one of 20 infants, it is important to verify that no child abuse or mistreatment claims have been filed.  Most states required large daycare centers, including home centers, to register with them.  All complaints and violations should public knowledge.

A new worker added.  In many cases, in-home daycares have one provider.  It is common for that provider to expand their services.  After all, it does mean more profits.  At this point and time, an assistant is usually hired.  Even if you love your daycare provider, never send your child to their care without knowing about their assistants.  These daycare assistants will handle your child, so make sure they are safe.  A paid background check or search of public records can give you insight.

A family member moved it.  Does your daycare provider have older children?  Even if they moved out of the home, changes may occur.  In hard times, parents welcome their children warmly.  If this occurs, it does show that your daycare provider has compassion for children, but what about that newly added houseguest?  Do they have a criminal record; a record that may include crimes against children?  The moment you discover that a family member has moved into your child’s in-home daycare is the moment you need to put on your detective hat.

A suspicion.  In cases of abuse and neglect, parents are often shocked.  After all, they aren’t there.  Even still, parents can get a good idea of care by speaking to their children or by reviewing the body for telltale signs of abuse.  If your suspicious are aroused for any reason at all, start investigating.  Not only that, pull your child from care immediately.  If you suspect abuse, contact the police department.

As you can see, daycare providers should be investigated in many situations.  All daycare providers should be thoroughly looked at, but it is important for in-home centers.  Not all states require the monitoring of in-home daycares, especially if the child count is low.  A daycare license does not determine the quality or level of care received, but it is important to investigate and rely on best judgment.  If a concern of yours, opt for a daycare monitored by the state.  They are subject to strict rules and unannounced visits.

Now that you know the importance of investigating daycare providers, how do you do so?  As previously stated, you can search public records or request a background check.  If your provider holds a daycare license with the state, contact county officials.  Not only can you lodge a complaint, but you should be able to review previous complaints and violations.
